Farming Alpaca Southland

About Us

ABOUT ALPACAS AND US

Alpaca farming is generally easy in Southland but alpacas must have shelter and food when the storms roll in.

Alpacas are happy with a good supply of grass and hay throughout the year, and a supply of fresh water.

Sheep fencing is normally adequate for alpacas, and a small enclosure or set of yards where the routine tasks can be done easily. The routine tasks are vaccinations, Vitamin D injections, toenail trimming when required, and annual shearing.

The alpaca fleeces are sorted at shearing - into saddle / neck / bib / legs / belly.

The saddle is further skirted and cleaned before sending to the mill for making into our own 100% alpaca yarn. We also process alpaca fibre at  home.
